Join us at Henley’s Christ Church on Friday December 7 for a unique Christmas concert suitable for all the family, featuring two of the Literary Festival’s most-loved speakers: Sir Michael Morpurgo and Virginia McKenna.
Morpurgo’s The Best Christmas Present in the World revisits the trenches of the First World War and the haunting story of Christmas 1914 when soldiers on both sides put down their weapons in honourof Christmas Day. A heartwarming tale of humanity and courage, this vivid and emotive war story is thoughtfully interspersed with traditional Christmas carols from Britain, Belgium and France – including While Shepherds Watched and Good King Wenceslas – sung by award-winning a capella six-piece Voices at the Door. The show is in support of Farms for City Children, the charity founded by Sir Michael and his wife Clare that gives urban children from across the country the chance to live and work on a real farm.
The Henley concert will be the only performance of The Best Christmas Present in the World this year as we mark centenary of the end of the War, having previously been presented with the same cast at the National Theatre and in Belgium and directed by Simon Reade, whose stage and screen credits include Private Peaceful and Journey’s End.
War Horse author and former Children’s Laureate Morpurgo’s previous events at Christ Church have been among the fastest-selling in the Festival’s history, while Born Free star McKenna’s talks have captivated capacity audiences at the Kenton Theatre. Do not miss this truly inspiring and atmospheric celebration of Christmas.
The concert lasts 75 minutes with no interval. Recommended for adults and children aged seven and up.
